The next event

Date:    25 February

Times:  17.30 - 20:00*

Venue:  Christian Aid Head Office, 35 Lower Marsh, Waterloo, London SE1 7RL [map]**

*We must vacate building by 20:30 latest - but there's the option to continue in the pub!

**Please do not contact Christian Aid directly about this event. They have been kind enough to let us use a great space at their offices, but are not responsible for the organisation of the event and have got important work to do!

**Sign up for the 25 February event**

The venue

We are delighted that Christian Aid has kindly made their 'Forum' available free of charge for the February event.  Many thanks indeed to Steven Buckley and Peter Berry at Christian Aid for their help and support.

The Forum is situated on the ground floor of Christian Aid's head offices in Waterloo, just off the main reception, and has a capacity for around 50-75 people, depending on the layout.  Plans at the moment are to keep this 'cafĂ© style', with groups of five or six people around small tables, to continue the informal, collaborative style of NFPtweetup.

Drinks and snacks will be available during the event, and are kindly provided by Just Giving.

Agenda and format

Now that we have confirmation on our venue, we can better design the event based on the space and the facilities it has (which are pretty good!).

5.30 - 6.00pm     Arrive, get your badge, grab a drink, have a chat, find a seat, and tweet!

6.00 - 6.05pm     Welcome and introduction

6.05 - 6.15pm     What is Twitter to you?  Slideshow of thoughts, crowdsourced between now and the event [see below for info].

  • The slideshow will be shared online prior to the event.
  • During the slideshow, we ask participants using Twitter to tweet their thoughts and questions about the ideas raised in the slides, or any other questions they may have.
  • Those at the event not yet using Twitter can either post their first tweet through the NFPtweetup Twitter                             profile, or have it posted for them by @amyrsward, who will take you through posting your first tweet, or do it for you.

6.15 - 6.30pm     We will aggregate questions from the Twitter stream and define groups to explore these points around the                             main areas of interest.  Each group will be faciliated and the facilitator will tweet the questions, thoughts and                             ideas that come out of each group's session.  Everyone using Twitter is asked to post at least one tweet from                             their session, sharing an insight or a take out from the discussion.

6.30 - 7.30pm     Breakout into groups around areas of interest to explore questions, ideas, learn practical tips,

learn about tools, hear from others about their experiences, share yours and tweet!

7.30 - 8.00pm     Come back together and review what we learned, and tweeted, and share across groups and through Twitter                             stream to online participants.

8.00pm               Vacate venue and make way to pub/ restaurant/ bar with interesting people you have met at the NFPtweetup,                            or home, as you wish.

More information about how to take part online and follow groups will be added to this wiki before the event.

Collaborative slideshow

Between now and the event, we'd like you to send in one slide with your take on the question, 'What is Twitter to you?'.

You may send your slides in with your Twitter profile ID or anonymously.

We did a collaborate slideshow for the previous NFPtweetup [view it here], it was a lot of fun and a great way to kick off the conversation, so please take part this time and help us to create a great set of resources to be shared and referenced online during and after the event.

Please send slides to Rachel Beer.  We need to operate a strict deadline, so the slideshow can be pulled together in time for the NFPtweetup, so any slides must be sent in by 5pm on 24 February.

Paul Webster shared some questions/ thoughts about the type of event on Twitter: 'headspin at moment on diffs between a tweetup, a geekup, a barcamp, a tuttle, a socmedcafe a nettues.'  (Here are some tweets in reply) Perhaps this is worth exploring as we consider the format of future NFPtweetups?  What do you think?

Thoughts:

  • Unconference (e.g. barcamp, amplified)

We have possibly started to go down this route a little bit and could continue to develop in this direction, as this is a good way to generate and capture thoughts and ideas to share (using flipcharts (photos of on Flickr), video, mindmapping, live capture on wiki etc. etc.).  This could create some great resources to be accessed by a wider audience.

  • Meetup (e.g. Tuttle)

Without any formal structure.  People just get together, network & chat.  Quite social, although people do still connect around professional interests and make contacts that they go on to collaborate with on projects.

It would be good to retain some structure, so there is a degree of focus, and to continue to generate content that can be shared with a wider audience that has some longevity.  Let's keep a relaxed, social element, and a degree of informality though.

  • NetTuesdays

Is there a way that we can continue with the NFPtweetups that doesn't just double up with NetTuesdays?

There's a certain dynamism to NFPtweetup, because it stems from Twitter and - if we can get live content, including tweets out there during the event, that people can engage with in real time - continuing in this vein offers something different.

I think incorporating twitter/nfptweetup into Net Tuesday could be fun but on the whole, the events are made for the whole spectrum of the community: people who haven't heard of any of these tools all the way to the people who built 'em.  I think it would be most helpful if it was a hands-on event so people could see how to really do it.  The events vary though with topic and style.  I'm sure we can figure something out and would love to look at it closer once we have the survey results :) (ASW)

More on the February - and future event themes - here.

Thinking about format...

I feel like I'm unclear on the goals for the NFPtweetups, and think that if we highlighted some specific goals it would not be a decision about what kind of format to go with because the most natural one to facilitate the goals would emerge.  If we are after creating live content and sharing it live, then we need an event style that will allow for that.  If we are looking for an exchange of ideas, conversations and connections, it's going to be a very different event than one centered on live content. And so on.

So, could people list below the goals for the events, what they hope to get out of them, and so on.  If someone has already listed the goal/s you have, just mark that you are also in favor of it.

Goals:

  • meeting Twitterati offline / face-to-face
  • sharing ideas, best practices, examples

How we set the date

Feedback from the first NFPtweetup in November 08 was overwhelmingly in favour of quarterly events, so the next event is in February, then we'll probably aim for another in May, then August, provided there is demand.

We used this Doodle page to help us pick a date in February that worked for as many people as possible.
